Travelers throughout the Himalayan region will find mani stones along walking paths, within monastery grounds, nestled among rocks in the mountains, and carefully stacked in mounds by the side of the road to protect travelers. Mani means ‘precious’ or ‘jewel’. Stones known as ‘mani’ are inscribed with mantras and sacred symbols, the best known being Om Mani Padme Hum, the mantra associated with the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, embodiment of enlightened compassion. Pilgrims carry mani stones as blessings and often place them on a mani wall or mound as they pass by, a meritorious gesture equivalent to chanting mantras. Thus, mounds and walls of mani stones have continued to expand throughout the years. These Mani stones from Nepal bear auspicious symbols and images of animals associated with the twelve-year cycle of the Tibetan horoscope. They are hand-carved on slate, with a small hole at the top for hanging inside or outside your home or from a tree in your garden. | |
